Weirton Medical Center and ArcelorMittal Weirton Team Up on Cholesterol Screenings

Weirton Medical Center and ArcelorMittal Weirton have teamed up to offer cholesterol screenings in Brooke and Hancock counties. Funded by grants from ArcelorMittal and the Weirton Medical Center Foundation, the Wellness Office of Weirton Medical Center conducted cholesterol screenings at two local schools recently. A screening was held at Brooke High School on Apr. 22 and one was held at St. Paul’s School on Apr. 28. More screenings are being planned at other locations.

Dr. Joseph P. Endrich, president and chief executive officer of Weirton Medical Center, said that “We are very pleased to have ArcelorMittal join us in offering this important health test for high cholesterol. Their support is vital to continuing this service to the community,” he said.

“The health and safety of our employees is a number one priority at ArcelorMittal,” said Brian James, general manager, ArcelorMittal Weirton. “This commitment extends into the communities where we live and work. Through our partnership with the Weirton Medical Center, we hope to educate our neighbors of all ages on how to live a healthy, quality life.”

High cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The most common measurement of cholesterol is total cholesterol. According to the American Heart Association, a total cholesterol level of 200 mg/dL to 239 mg/dL is borderline high and 240 mg/dL or higher is considered to be high. High total cholesterol combined with other cholesterol measurements such as a high LDL, low HDL and high triglycerides along with risk factors such as overweight, lack of exercise and family history of heart disease could indicate the presence of serious coronary heart disease.

The screenings at Brooke High and St. Paul’s School were for the students, teachers and staff and were not open to the community. Screenings for the general public will be announced later this year.

Additionally, Weirton Medical Center will host a cholesterol screening event for Impress USA employees on June 2.
