Physicians Achieve Board Certification
Drs. Jorge Roig and Bryan Matusic, Weirton Medical Center anesthesiologists, have successfully passed the American Board of Pain Medicine (ABPM) certification examination in pain medicine. Drs. Roig and Matusic join the ranks of over 2,200 Diplomates certified by ABPM nationwide. Dr. Hani Gabriel, who is also a Weirton Medical Center anesthesiologist, previously received ABPM certification. The physicians also work at The Pain Center at the Weirton Medical Center.
The ABPM certification exam is composed of 400 questions developed by an expert panel of pain medicine physicians and consultants from Knapp and Associates, a research and development firm that serves certification bodies. The examination was administered on March 7, 2009 at ACT test centers across the country and is eight hours in duration. The certification process employs practice-based requirements against which members of the profession can be assessed.
The specialty of pain medicine is concerned with the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of painful disorders. Such disorders may have pain and associated symptoms arising from a discrete cause, such as postoperative pain or pain associated with malignancy, or may be syndromes in which pain constitutes the primary problem, such as neuropathic pains or headaches. The pain physician may provide care at various levels, such as direct treatment, prescribing medication, prescribing rehabilitative services, performing pain relieving procedures, counseling of patients and families, and coordination of care with other healthcare providers.
Founded in 1991 as the American College of Pain Medicine, the ABPM is a not-for-profit corporation established to develop and administer practice-related examinations in the field of pain medicine and to award certification to those physicians successfully completing the ABPM credentialing process and examination.
