WMC Diabetes Educator Recertified
Jennifer Springer, R.N., B.S.N., C.D.E., diabetes education coordinator for the Weirton Medical Center, has been recertified as a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Education (NCBDE). She was required to meet rigorous standards for the recertification.
Achieving the CDE credential demonstrates that the health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality of care for people with diabetes. Currently, there are about 16,000 diabetes educators across the country that hold NCBDE certification.
Ms. Springer first took the exam in 1986. She manages the medical center’s Diabetes-In-Control management program, which provides education to those with diabetes to help them manage the disease. She also provides consultation to members of the medical staff in assessing and educating their patients with diabetes.
NCBDE was established in 1986 to develop and administer a certification program for health care professionals who teach individuals with diabetes how to manage their disease. Left untreated, diabetes can cause serious health problems including heart and kidney disease along with circulatory problems.
