MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Weirton Medical Center’s $1 million magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit is one of the largest units of its type in the area and is considered on a par with similar units in Pittsburgh hospitals. Although some have opted for an “open” MRI, WMC chose a traditional or closed unit because of its ability to produce higher quality pictures.
The magnet strength of the WMC unit is double that of most open MRI’s. Open MRI’s do not have the same magnet strength as a traditional unit. Higher magnetic strength translates into much better resolutions of body images.
The tunnel in the newer WMC traditional “closed” unit is half as enclosed as those of older “closed units.” The newer tunnel is only four feet in length and the older tunnels were eight feet long. The diameter of the tunnel is also larger so that patients do not feel so claustrophobic.
The WMC Unit can complete most scans in 30 to 40 minutes. Open MRIs take 60 to 90 minutes for most scans.
Shorter exam times and a maximum patient-friendly design help allay concerns regarding claustrophobia and/or high anxiety while assuring optimal diagnostic results.
WMC’s MRI is able to perform a wide array of diagnostic examinations.
Regarding orthopedic patients, the new MRI will help diagnose some of the most difficult joints in the body, such as the shoulder and pelvis. It can also detect subtle damage to the spine and joints in patients with herniated disks and arthritis.
For the neurology patient, the unit allows viewing the small blood vessels in the brain to spot aneurysms or identify plaque build-ups in the carotoid arteries that might lead to a future stroke. The MRI can also help personnel diagnose blood flow problems for patients with diabetes.
Our unit can provide the physician with vascular diagnostic information that other local MRI units cannot provide. For example, our unit provides better diagnostic information regarling vessel lumen size. These are only a few of the procedures.
